Finding Real Connections

We are surrounded in an era of social media, virtual interactions and new technology. As a society, loneliness is becoming a pressing issue. Many individuals these days are interacting online, which tend to be not genuine or real. When I created my first social media account, I would have strangers comment on my photos or send me a messages. While some of the people were nice, others were not. A few of these users were saying horrible things about the way I looked. Although they were commenting on my appearance, each of those users intentions were not genuine. Times are changing and children are getting on social media younger and younger these days. I regret downloading social media in middle school because the users who commented about my appearance made me extremely self conscious. As I mentioned, not every user said horrible things about me. But, some people wanted to be my friend for the wrong reasons. I had to learn this unfortunately the hard way and it only continued to get worse as I was getting older. I am grateful for all of the friendships i’ve experienced, even the bad ones. I am firm believer that everything happens for a reason and the people who aren’t supposed to be in my life have taught me a valuable lesson. To this day, I am still learning that people can change on you in a heart beat. If someone is in your life for the wrong reasons, that’s a sign you need to end the friendship. For example, I was friends with a girl for eight years and I thought she would be in my life forever. Unfortunately, I found out that she was saying horrible things behind my back and making up false rumors not only about me, but my entire family. I was devastated when I learned what she had done, but looking back, I am extremely grateful she is not by my side anymore. Losing a person in your life is a hard experience and emotion for humans. But, I believe that going through a lose opens up doors in ways that you would never imagine. It’s important to reflect on the relationships you have in your life. If you never have to question a connection with anyone, then you know that it’s real.
